Angelo Maria Maiocchi (1775-1843), watchmaker, dies at the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan, which appoints his heir, with the provision to provide for the construction of a wooden choir behind the altar in the Church of the Annunciation, the hospital parish (the choir is then built between 1853 and 1854). The portrait is commissioned to Giulio Cesare Poggi, who represents the benefactor with quiet realism, signing the canvas on the lower right "by C. Poggi". In the background of the painting the column of the Verziere is depicted, not far from the Hospital.
