The portrait is a repetition of a painting from 1557 that came from François Clouet's atelier (at the Pau Castle). Contrary to the original, it is characterized by harder modeling and more graphic design of both facial features and elements of clothing. It is an example of a Renaissance French court portrait, which usually depicted the model in a bust and in which the meticulous reconstruction of richly decorated clothes was important.
