Anton Seifert, born in Bohemia in 1712, came to Georgia in 1734 and was the first Moravian minister ordained in America. Seifert moved to Pennsylvania in 1740; he was sent to Bethlehem to fell logs for the settlement's first building. In 1742, Count von Zinzendorf officiated at his wedding to his first wife, Anna. After her death in 1744, Seifert returned to Europe where he spent the remainder of his life serving the Moravian Church.

This painting demonstrates Haidt's strong drawing of facial features to delineate strength of character and his emphasis on eyes and hands to animate the portrayal of his sitters. This painting was probably executed in England, as Seifert left Bethlehem before Haidt arrived in 1754.
