Antonio Chiodo (1814-1895), a native of Crema, a merchant of fabrics, joined the company with Giuseppe Rotta, a soap merchant, who in turn benefited the Ospedale Maggiore. The substantial fortune that derives from his commercial activities is destined to the hospital in death; in the will he asks that the funeral be rendered "rather honorable and worthy of a man who has always worked and economized to do good and not harm" and to be cremated. It also provides bequests for welfare institutions in his hometown. The portrait commission is entrusted to Angelo Trezzini, who chooses to set the figure in a garden.
