The portrait depicts the famous ophthalmologist Augusto Pier d'Houy (1851-1886), who died young, and in whose name his father Leopoldo makes a donation to the Ospedale Maggiore. There are two versions of the portrait, which vary only in the different angle of the figure. For the facial features of the face, the painter Giovanni Beltrami is inspired by a photograph.
