Counselor had died - apparently of dysentery - on September 22 and was buried in Igreja Nova. On October 5, after the death of the last resisters, General Artur Oscar ordered the rubble from the temple to be removed in order to find the body, which was dug up and exhumed. The photo was taken at the general's request, becoming final proof of the destruction of Canudos and his leader. Minutes were also drawn up and sent to the Minister of War. Counselor's head has been removed for medical studies, which consider him "normal". The body was reburied in the same place.
