Spanish painter Vicente López, the official portraitist of Fernando VII, was very well-favored by the Spanish court during the late-eighteenth century. In this portrait, Captain Roche Hastings, possibly one of the officers who led the British troops during the Peninsular War, wears a military jacket with no decoration, set against a plain, dark background.
