Carlo Calderari (1784-1860), Milanese noble, esteemed administrative official, leaves a conspicuous legacy of about 2,000,000 lire to the Maggiore Hospital, which provides its own initiative to compensate some relatives ignored in the will with legacies. The commission of the portrait is entrusted to Raffaele Casnedi, on the eve of his appointment as professor of the Accademia di Brera.
