Portrait of Carlo Masini

Carlo Masini (1914-1995) is not only a benefactor of the Maggiore Hospital, but an enlightened President from 1959 to 1966. An economist, an expert in budgeting and accounting, work organization and business economics, he was Professor of General Accounting and Business Economics at Bocconi University for almost thirty years, President of the General Academy of Accounting, Director of the Institute of Business Economics "Gino Zappa" and administrator of Cariplo (now Banca Intesa San Paolo). As an economist he places the person, his contribution of labor and capital at the center of the company's life, the latter the result of real savings and not deriving from the excess liquidity of the Central Banks: the real engine of investment is savings and the production factor par excellence work. During his presidency of the Maggiore Hospital, the new San Carlo Hospital, a hospital for the south-west of Milan, inaugurated by Aldo Moro, was built very quickly and with great efficiency. Masini publishes about the Maggiore Hospital the monograph "Charity: the Ca 'Granda of Milan" and on the theme of Health "The intervention of the State in Public Hospital Organizations", where once again affirms the centrality of the patient as a person for the individual needs, and community health needs. The commission of the portrait is entrusted to Silvio Consadori; between the two sketches presented, with different perspectives, the Artistic Commission chooses what has as its background the San Carlo Hospital, whose silhouette fills the light of the wide window that the president, sitting at a desk bare, has the bas-relief behind depicting the announcing angel by Angelo Biancini, which he donated to the hospital.
