Portrait of Celestina Clerici

Bartolomeo Giuliano1871

Ca’ Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico
Milan, Italy

Celestina Clerici (1794-1870), sister of the doctor and benefactor Giovanni Clerici, is in turn a benefactor of the Maggiore Hospital. The portrait, commissioned from Bartolomeo Giuliano, is executed using a photograph as a model. The "smudged" background that contrasts with the academic drawing of the woman's face and severe figure, demonstrates the painter's interest in the most innovative contemporary artistic movements.
