The Royal Society
London, United Kingdom

This engraved 3/4 portrait of Charles Lyell was engraved as a lithograph by Albert Newsom and P.S. Duval, after a daguerreotype taken by English photographer John Jabez Edwin Mayall.
Mayall then worked in a portrait studio in Philadelphia Pa., and was made famous for his carte-de-visite photographic portraits and for his work with artist J. A. Turner on the Niagara Falls.
Charles Lyell was a geologist who travelled to America and was the first to explain how the Niagara Falls was formed through the erosion of the cascading waters.
