In 1908, Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) painted the "Portrait of Charlotte Berend-Corinth in the Garden". Charlotte Berend-Corinth began as a gifted student of the artist and became his wife in 1903.

She herself vividly described the creation of this hazy seeming portrait, which appears to testify to her relaxed, sweet temper:

"We had rented a mill in Waitlage for the summer. The allure of this otherwise modest residence was a large arbour, overgrown with honeysuckle and small fruit trees. .. Returning from an outing in the city, I sat down, rather tired, in this arbour, before entering the house. Lovis stood before me. Would you bring me a glass of fresh water from the house,"I asked, 'I am quite exhausted.''Hm.' said Lovis, 'I would prefer, to be honest, to paint you there, and I mean right this minute.' He began the layout of the painting and exclaimed in delight again and again.….. He worked on the painting three times, but he completed the head on the first day. I think that the somewhat dreamy expression particularly interested him.
