Soldier, landscape artist, architect and landscape designer, Coplestone (‘Cop’) Warre Bampfylde was born on the Hestercombe estate on 28 February 1720. This early portrait, which was probably painted in 1740 to mark his coming-of-age in 1741, tells us a great deal about the history of Hestercombe House. Opposite the west front is a gated 'Green Court', a family chapel (razed c. 1766) and an orangery, now the Bampfylde Hall.
