Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was an Amsterdam art collector. His collection of around 7000 drawings was a particularly famous part of his collection. Ploos van Amstel had his portrait painted on the occasion of his marriage to Elisabeth, the daughter of the painter Cornelis Troost. Her portrait is hanging here as well.

Van der Mijn, who worked in Amsterdam, came from a London family of artists. The drawing that Ploos van Amstel is holding was made by Van der Mijn’s brother Frans.
