Ramkrishna Vithal Lad (1822 – 1874), popularly known as Dr. Bhau Daji Lad was an eminent philanthropist, physician, historian and surgeon. As a practitioner he achieved great popularity and success and conducted original research in the use of Indian drugs to cure leprosy in its early stages. He held a number of positions in various educational societies in Bombay. He was the first native sheriff of Bombay, a position he held in 1869 and 1871. He also did pivotal research in deciphering the inscriptions at Elephanta.
Dr. Bhau Daji Lad was a Secretary of the Museum Trust along with Sir George Birdwood and one of the key persons who helped secure funds for the construction of the Museum. To honour his vision and dedication that led to the establishment of this Institution, the name of the Museum was changed from Victoria and Albert Museum to Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in the year 1975.
