Emilio Della Sala (1800-1868), described as a charitable, religious and generous person by those who worked for him, names his wife as heir who, on her death, leaves everything to the Ospedale Maggiore. The portrait is commissioned to Francesco Valaperta, trained at the school of Francesco Hayez, who thus begins his collaboration with the Quadreria.
