Portrait of Emilio Treves

Vittorio Matteo Corcos1907

Labirinto della Masone

Labirinto della Masone
Italy

This painting was made using a photographic portrait as a model, and provides one of the best examples of Vittorio Corcos' work. Dated 1907, the canvas depicts the seventy-three year old publisher Emilio Treves. Treves began his career as a journalist, working in Trieste, Paris and Milan. It was in Milan that, in 1861, he founded his own publishing house - in which he was joined by his brother after 1872 - which soon became a center of international culture. Among the publications it is necessary to mention works of contemporary authors such as Pirandello, Verga, D'Annunzio, De Amicis, Capuana, Deledda, Gozzano, Tolstoy and Dickens. He also undertook publishing initiatives with amazing popular success such as the illustrated Bible by Gustave Doré and the periodical "L'Illustrazione Italiana”.
