Mauritshuis
Den Haag, Netherlands

This is Engel de Ruyter, the 20-year-old son of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Like his father, he had his portrait painted by Ferdinand Bol, who portrayed Engel as a ruler, despite his youth.

The gilt frame of the painting is original. It is richly decorated with attributes that refer to the navy.
