Portrait of Francesco delle Opere

Pietro Perugino1494

Uffizi Gallery

Uffizi Gallery
Florence, Italy

The painting, signed and dated on the back, portrays Francesco delle Opere (who died in Venice in 1496), brother of Giovanni delle Corniole, famous master carver of precious stones and friend of Perugino. The meticulousness of the details of the portrait set against a gentle landscape is reminiscent of Flemish prototypes. The inscription TIMETE DEUM on the scroll is a recurrent warning in Savonarola's sermons. From the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici (1617- 1675) it has been in the Uffizi since 1833.
