Francesco Osculati (1812-1890), a fervent patriot fighting in the Five Days of Milan in 1848. At his death he left his brother Emilio heir, oversaw a conspicuous legate for the Ospedale Maggiore, as well as other welfare agencies. The commission of the portrait is entrusted to Vespasiano Bignami, who had solicited the job with a letter, in which he attempted to represent the benefactor "in a simple and decent attitude" and who in the work reveals his adherence to the style of Tranquillo Cremona.
