Giovanni Brioschi (1778-1855), engineer and son of Giuseppe cashier of the Ospedale Maggiore, benefits various welfare institutions; in his will he appoints his sister with the condition that upon his death the Maggiore Hospital would come into possession of 80,000 Austrian liras for the maintenance of four chronic patients. The portrait of the benefactor is commissioned to Giuseppe Bertini, an academic from Brera, who begins his collaboration with the Ca 'Granda with this work.
