The portrait was donated to the Accademia di San Luca in 1935 by the sitter himself, and is representative of Mancini’s later work. It was painted in 1920, the year in which Mancini had an important solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, confirming his position as a leading figure in Italian art. Antonio Mancini was elected accademico di merito on 29 June 1913.
