Giuseppe Marelli (1847-1932), first helps his father in his small coal shop, then develops his father's business so as to become one of the most important traders in the branch, having among his clients the Municipality of Milan, the Teatro alla Scala and the Ospedale Maggiore itself. In this institution he leaves a legacy of 300,000 lire in his will, in which he appoints his nieces as heirs. The commission of the portrait is entrusted to the painter Oscar Sorgato, who portrays the benefactor with a background that opens onto a glimpse of the countryside.
