The two are shown sitting out of doors in front of an ivy-grown wall at Ruskin’s home of Brantwood, Coniston in Cumbria, England. Ruskin is seated on a cane chair and shown in profile. Acland faces him, holding a book or album and with a walking stick held in the crook of his left arm.

Inscribed below with facsimile signatures and the caption: ‘RUSKIN AND ACLAND AT BRANTWOOD, 1893’.

Sir Henry Wentworth Acland, 1st baronet (1815-1900), British physician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1847.
