A stipple engraving portrait of Humphrey Repton (1752-1818) by W. Holl after a painting by S. Shelley. From the frontispiece to Repton's book, 'Observations on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening', printed by T.Bensley, for J. Taylor at the Architectural Library, High Holborn 1803. Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and became head gardener at Hampton Court Palace, following on from 'Capability' Brown. He was the first designer to use the title of 'landscape gardener' and his numerous designs included, Blaise Castle, Bowood, Plas Newydd, Sheffield Park, Sheringham Park, Woburn Abbey and Russell Square.
