Innocente Bianchi (1782-1859), merchant of iron articles, appoints his son Carlo as heir, linking to the Maggiore Hospital "for reasons known only to him", as he says in his will, 40,000 Austrian liras. The portrait is commissioned to Giuseppe Penuti, an artist who collaborates in other works with the Picture Gallery and who shows familiarity with hospital portraiture, even if it is in keeping with a usual cliché. The image is however very realistic and not celebratory.
