Portrait of Johann Gottfried Kinkel

Johann Gottfried Kinkel (1815-1882) - German Protestant theologian, university lecturer, writer and politician. He took an active part in the revolution of 1848; in the same year, he entered the Prussian parliamentary chamber from the far left wing. During the Baden Rising, he was wounded and fell into the hands of the Prussians, who sentenced him by a court-martial to a life imprisonment, but he managed to escape to England less than two years later, and then to Zurich, where he stayed until the end of his days. An advocate of regaining independence by Poland (the author of the booklet “Resurrection of Poland - strength of Germany”, 1865). At the request of Władysław Plater, with whom he was friends, he delivered a very enthusiastic speech in the occasion of the unveiling of the Bar Column on 16 August 1868.
