John Habersham was the youngest son of James Habersham—a merchant, plantation owner, and acting governor in colonial Georgia. John served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. President George Washington appointed him port collector for Savannah. Habersham also served on the board of trustees that founded the University of Georgia in 1785.
