Portrait of Joseph as a child

Amos Cassiolica. 1872

Fondazione Musei Senesi

Fondazione Musei Senesi
Siena, Italy

The painting portrayed the young child of the painter itself. The balcony where the child is leaning on is a very impressive solution for creating a suggested depth in perspective. It perfectly represents Cassioli’s style in portraits: a deep interest in the psychological attitude of the character, the study of minimal details in the face - clear like a photograph – the sketchy painting of the dress and of the background. The whole composition is based on the Purism examples and the Academic lessons of Cassioli’s teacher, Luigi Mussini. He was the most important Sienese artist at those times and the leader of a large and prolific workshop.
