This portrait was taken while Lucy Burns served time in the Occoquan Workhouse in 1917. This was not the first time she was arrested for suffrage activity. Burns joined the militant suffragettes while attending graduate school in England. She eventually met Alice Paul, a fellow American, in a London police station. After returning to the United States, they injected the suffrage movement with more aggessive strategies.
