Luigi Cassani (1851-1911), from a wealthy family, an accountant, does not practice the profession, but dedicates himself to painting under the guidance of Virgilio Ripari. In his will he appoints his sister Marcella Castelli as universal heir, reserving legacies in favor of various institutions including the Accademia di Brera, for the purchase of a painting to enrich the collections of modern art, the Municipality of Milan for the restoration of the church of San Maurizio at the Monastero Maggiore, a building shown to him by Senator Luca Beltrami, a great art expert and his friend, and the Ospedale Maggiore, which receives a sum of 100,000 lire. It also indicates the name of Carlo Stragliati, an artist who was a pupil of Giuseppe Bertini, for the commemorative portrait and the salary of 4,000 lire that the hospital should pay him.
