Milan, Italy

Luigi Coccini (1832-1917), a renowned goldsmith, leaves 50,000 lire to the Maggiore Hospital, with a legacy for a life annuity in favor of his maid. The portrait, first commissioned to Giuseppe Palanti, an important collaborator of the Quadreria Ospedalierta, who refuses the assignment due to the lack of iconographic documentation, is executed by Giuseppe Lombardi, who had known the deceased, but is rejected by the Artistic Commission, "because he does not correspond to the artistic needs of the Picture Gallery ".
