Queen Maria II of Portugal wears a sash across her chest representing the Three Military Orders. Her left hand rest on the Constitutional Charter of 1826. Krumholz was born in Austria in 1810. He studied in Vienna, Rome and Venice before finally settling in Paris where he displayed his work regularly. In the second half of the decade of 1840 he came to Portugal serving as a painter to King D. Ferdinand II of Portugal. In 1848 he visited Brazil, returning to Europe 5 years later. He also visited India. He died in Bern in 1878.
