The countess Maria Visconti Ciceri, daughter of Laura, founder of the Fatebenesorelle Hospital in Milan, emulating her mother, after her death (1833) bequeathed large donations, to the hospitals of Novara and Como and the Milanese Fatebenefratelli, in addition to the Maggiore Hospital. The portrait, commissioned from the painter Giuseppe Sogni, who performs other works for the hospital picture gallery, is a fine example of romantic portraiture in the Lombardy area, influenced by Francesco Hayez.
