Henry Clay Frick commissioned Théobald Chartran to paint a posthumous portrait of his daughter Martha Howard Frick (1885-1891). Chartran achieved a realistic likeness, idealizing the young girl in a sentimental portrayal, the artist nearly transformed Martha into an angel by placing her against a heavenly blue background and draping her in flowers.
