The portrait's sitter is Mary French, at the age of 13. Benjamin Greenleaf was commissioned to paint portraits of General John French I, his wife Hannah Wales French, and their seven children, among whom was Mary French. General John I was the great-great-grandfather of Mary French Rockefeller. Six of the seven sibling portraits remain in the collection today.

Greenleaf was a native of Haverhill, Massachusetts who attended the nearby Dartmouth College until 1813.
