"Ismael Smith Marí (Barcelona, 1886 – New York, 1972) was one of the most unclassifiable Catalan artists of the period that spanned from Modernisme to Noucentisme.
Utrillo’s portraits had a slightly caricaturesque look about them, the same style he had used in his work practically since the beginning of his artistic career. The elongated style is also a characteristic feature of Smith’s work, as regards both his sculptures and drawings or engravings.
Smith probably met Miquel Utrillo in the Cafè Continental, in Barcelona, where they both used to go."
