"Modesto Sanchez Ortiz (Huelva, 1857 - Madrid, 1937) was an important person for Rusiñol and for Sitges. For this reason he painted this portrait but he never sold it and it was always kept in the Cau Ferrat museum. He was the La Vanguardia’s director from 1888 to 1901, during those days he brought the paper up to date, and it became leader of independent newspapers. He was fully integrated to the cultural life of Barcelona, opening the paper to young Catalan artists and intellectuals such as Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Isidre Nonell, Raimon Casellas and others. The great friendship between Rusiñol and Sánchez Ortiz was born at that time. As a result of this fact, the journalist is really involved in the Rusiñol social life, you can see the diffusion that La Vanguardia did about the Modernism Feasts, also about Rusiñol and the Cau Ferrat."
