This portrait of Christian Lilienthal forms a pair with another portrait by the same artist of his wife Susan. As was long traditional in portraits of married couples, he and his wife are turned toward each other. Lilienthal, a tobacco merchant, built a Gothic Revival mansion Belvoir (“beautiful view”) around 1854, on North Broadway in Yonkers, New York. Sold first to a Jesuit group and then in business as the Abbey Inn restaurant, Belvoir was gone in time to be replaced by a 1950s suburban neighborhood.
