Portrait of Mrs. Pérez de Ayala

Joaquín Sorolla1920

Sorolla Museum
Madrid, Spain

This is a very important painting because it was Sorolla's last painting. It is a portrait of Mabel Rick Darkhell, Pérez de Ayala's wife. On 17 June 1920, while he was painting this picture in his garden in the presence of the sitter and her husband, Sorolla suffered an attack of hemiplegia which prevented him from painting again. In fact we can see that the painting remained unfinished.
