The bust is turned to the left. Edward Kuczyński, a graphic artist and educator, is considered the founder of the Toruń woodcut school. He received his diploma as a graphic artist in 1939 from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. He was a student of Ferdynand Ruszczyk, Benedykt Kubicki, Ludomir Sleńdziński, Jerzy Hoppen, and Bonawentura Lenart. In 1946, he settled in Toruń, where he served as a senior assistant, later becoming an associate professor at the Department of Graphics, then vice-dean and dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The artist mainly focused on woodcut, also practiced metal techniques, and occasionally linocut. He was also an outstanding creator of bookplates.
