Portrait of Napoleon

Johann Michael Voltz1814/1814

Fondazione Museo Glauco Lombardi

Fondazione Museo Glauco Lombardi
Parma, Italy

The print is part of a group of engravings (inv. 2714-2767) of the same origin received by the Museum on an indefinite loan.
It is one of the most widespread anti-Napoleonic caricatures: in the first week of its release, 20,000 copies were sold in Berlin, and there are at least 23 versions. Also this sheet, a replica addressed to the French public, has a caption that explores the subject: the unmistakable profile of Napoleon is composed of the symbols of his power and his greed, among which the most impressive is the mass of corpses that shape the face.
