Portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus framed in a gilded, corner-middle frame in the Louis Philippe style. The figure of the scientist emerges from a dark, almost black background. Copernicus shown as a half-figure en trois quarts. He stands behind a desk whose vertical wall ends with a volute. On the desk visible in the foreground there is a book signed De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (on the left) and a large celestial globe (on the right), from behind which protrudes a card with the inscription: Nicolaus Copernicus / Can(oni)c(u)s Varmi (ensis) Anno / 1473 aetatis 73 vol. There is an armillary sphere on the lid of the desk and a book next to it. The person portrayed has a young face, large dark eyes, black hair, a hairstyle typical of Copernicus and a mustache. He is dressed in two layers: a simple black robe with red, sleeveless outerwear on top. A white collar around the neck. The whole thing is in subdued, subdued colors.
