Portrait of Nikolaus Warken

Nikolaus Warken (1851-1920) from Hasborn was the first Saarlandic union leader. He stood up for the interests of miners and demanded the abolition of the twelve-hour underground working shift. He was convicted multiple times for inciting turmoil and instigating class conflicts. Warken worked as a hauler and later hewer in the Helenenschacht in Friedrichsthal. The portrait displays Nikolaus Warken, also called "Eckstein", as a "brave champion for the rights and laws of the miner".
