Paolo Beretta (1870-1899), belonging to a good middle-class family, died nineteen of nephritis while serving as a volunteer in a cavalry regiment. To commemorate her memory, her mother Luigia Andina, along with Paolo's brothers and sisters, donated 150,000 lire to the hospital for the construction of two new pediatric pavilions to be named after her son.
