The portrait shows Paulina Giebułtowska née Sikorska (1811 – 1881), mother-in-law of Jan Matejko. Matejko often placed the image of his mother-in-law in his paintings. The face of Paulina Giebułtowska is represented by Beata Kościelecka in the Union of Lublin (1869), Anna Mazowiecka in the Prussian Homage (1882), or an elderly woman in Zygmunt's Bell Suspension (1874). Many other figures in the painter's paintings have the features of his family and friends, often prominent figures in Krakow's city life.
