American fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo is known for revamping the image of the ?working girl? in Cosmopolitan magazine in the mid 1960s. In this black-and-white double portrait of Robert Mapplethorpe and Samuel Wagstaff, Scavullo captures a moment of affection between the artist and collector who were also long-time companions. Mapplethorpe stands just behind Wagstaff?s left shoulder with his arms reaching around in a protective embrace. Both men stare intently at the camera. While Scavullo was a prolific fashion photographer, he also captured numerous intimate moments shared between his friends and acquaintances in the celebrity, art and fashion worlds.
