  • Notes: During the 1920s, it was the custom of poet Olegário Mariano to have his friends for lunch at his home on Rua Pompeu Loureiro in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. On one such occasion, Portinari took up a pine board and painted the portrait of Rubens, the five-year-old son of sculptor Humberto Cozzo. The artist, who had recently won the Trip Prize, promised to complete the portrait when he returned from Europe. It is thought to be the artist’s last work before parting for Europe. Upon his return, however, the artist said he no longer painted in that style and would not take up the painting again; to do so would risk ruining the portrait.
  • Inscription: On reverse, inscription "ESTE, É UM RETRATO DE MEU FILHO RUBENS, PINTADO POR PORTINARI EM 1929 Humberto Cozzo”.
