Portrait of Samson Wertheimer

1800/1900

Jewish Museum Vienna

Jewish Museum Vienna
Vienna, Austria

After the death of Samuel Oppenheimer, Samson Wertheimer took over his role as the most important lender to the court. Like his predecessor, Wertheimer was also a philanthropist. He supported the poor, had synagogues built and financed the printing of Hebrew scripts. The portrait shows him not only as a man of the world but also as a pious scholar with parchment and quill surrounded by folios and manuscripts.
