The Sicilian Vincenzo Bellini, in this anonymous portrait on the wall, owes his European acclaim to Milan even though his most famous opera, Norma, was
booed at La Scala during a protest caused by artistic rivalries. The lead role on that difficult evening in 1831 was played by Giuditta Pasta, who sang also
in the première of The Sleepwalker, Bellini’s other masterpiece at the Teatro Carcano.
